Unlocking the Future of Energy Storage: A Roadmap
We consider emerging recommendations from the literature, markets, and leading experts on potential solutions for changing market structures and operations to unleash the potential
View DetailsFirst established in 2020 and founded on EPRI's mission of advancing safe, reliable, affordable, and clean energy for society, the Energy Storage Roadmap envisioned a desired future for energy storage applications and industry practices in 2025 and identified the challenges in realizing that vision.
Global installed energy storage is on a steep upward trajectory. From just under 0.5 terawatts (TW) in 2024, total capacity is expected to rise ninefold to over 4 TW by 2040, driven by battery energy storage systems (BESS). Last year saw a record-breaking 200 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of new BESS projects coming online, a growth rate of 80%.
The underlying motivation for DOE's strategic investment in energy storage is to ensure that the American people will have access to energy storage innovations that enable resilient, flexible, affordable, and secure energy systems and supply, for everyone, everywhere.
Target future states collaboratively developed as visions for the beneficial use of energy storage. Click on an individual state to explore identified gaps to achievement. Energy storage is essential to a clean and modern electricity grid and is positioned to enable the ambitious goals for renewable energy and power system resilience.
It enhances our understanding, from a macro perspective, of the development and evolution patterns of different specific energy storage technologies, predicts potential technological breakthroughs and innovations in the future, and provides more comprehensive and detailed basis for stakeholders in their technological innovation strategies.
In contrast, the application fields of the other four types of energy storage technologies are relatively limited. For example, electromagnetic EST has a fast response speed and is generally used for emergency power supply .
