Global Overview of Energy Storage Performance Test
This guideline was developed by the Clean Energy Council to fill the gap in Australian standards regarding the installation of battery energy storage devices in 2017.
View DetailsThis report describes development of an effort to assess Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) performance that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) and others can employ to evaluate performance of deployed BESS or solar photovoltaic (PV) +BESS systems.
Battery energy-storage systems typically include batteries, battery-management systems, power-conversion systems and energy-management systems 21 (Fig. 2b).
The maximum amount of energy accumulated in the battery within the analysis period is the Demonstrated Capacity (kWh or MWh of storage exercised). In order to normalize and interpret results, Efficiency can be compared to rated efficiency and Demonstrated Capacity can be divided by rated capacity for a normalized Capacity Ratio.
BESTs are increasingly deployed, so critical challenges with respect to safety, cost, lifetime, end-of-life management and temperature adaptability need to be addressed. The rise in renewable energy utilization is increasing demand for battery energy-storage technologies (BESTs).
Performance testing is a critical component of safe and reliable deployment of energy storage systems on the electric power grid. Specific performance tests can be applied to individual battery cells or to integrated energy storage systems.
The rise in renewable energy utilization is increasing demand for battery energy-storage technologies (BESTs). BESTs based on lithium-ion batteries are being developed and deployed. However, this technology alone does not meet all the requirements for grid-scale energy storage.
